Description
Rosso di Rocca is Albino Rocca's Langhe Nebbiolo, ninety-seven per cent Nebbiolo with a smattering of Cabernet Franc.
Albino Rocca is based at Barbaresco, and the Langhe Nebbiolo denomination gives the estate room to bottle Nebbiolo from outside the Barbaresco boundary. The Nebbiolo for this wine comes from a vineyard at Magliano Alfieri, in the first hills of the Roero across the Tanaro, where the vines were planted in 1967 and 2002 and the parcel was bought by the family in 2016. Roero's sandier ground tends to give Nebbiolo a lighter frame and more open perfume than the marl of the Barbaresco hill. The Cabernet Franc is drawn from twenty-year-old estate vines in Barbaresco itself, and in a small proportion it adds a little colour and mid-palate flesh without altering the character of the blend. The wine is bottled under screwcap, which suits its purpose as the early-drinking Nebbiolo of the range.
Ready on release and worth keeping five years or so. Serve with risotto, braised veal or a mushroom pasta at 16-18°C.
