Albino Rocca Langhe Nebbiolo Rosso di Rocca 2021

Albino Rocca Langhe Nebbiolo Rosso di Rocca is a Piedmontese red built for early drinking, 97 per cent Nebbiolo with a small addition of Cabernet Franc.

The Langhe denomination gives Piedmontese growers room to bottle Nebbiolo outside the strict boundaries of Barolo and Barbaresco, and it is where the lighter, sandier sites tend to end up. Most of the fruit here comes from a vineyard at Magliano Alfieri, in the first hills of Roero, planted in 1967 and 2002 and bought by the Rocca family in 2016. Roero's sand, as against the heavier marl on the Barbaresco side of the Tanaro, produces a Nebbiolo of lighter frame and earlier appeal, with the variety's scent and grip intact but its tannin gentler. The remaining fraction is Cabernet Franc from twenty-year-old estate vines in Barbaresco. Vinification is entirely in stainless steel, with no wood at any point, and the wine is bottled early to hold that freshness in place.

Approachable now and over the next three to four years; serve at 16°C with roast chicken, mushroom risotto or a young Toma.
