Description
Rosso di Rocca is 97 per cent Nebbiolo from the sandy soils of Roero with a small addition of estate Cabernet Franc, made for early drinking.
Roero lies across the Tanaro from Barbaresco, and its sandy soils give lighter, more perfumed Nebbiolo than the marl of the Langhe. The fruit here comes from a vineyard at Magliano Alfieri in the first hills of the zone, planted in 1967 and 2002 and bought by the Rocca family in 2016. The remaining three per cent is Cabernet Franc from twenty-year-old estate vines in Barbaresco, permitted within the broad Langhe DOC. The upbringing matches the intention: the wine is raised solely in tank and bottled early, so there is no oak tannin to work through and none of the drying grip that a longer élevage would add. Set alongside the family's Nebbiolo d'Alba, this is the brighter, more immediate of the two.
Drink now and over the next three years. Serve at 16°C, or lightly chilled, with charcuterie, roast chicken or tomato-based pasta.
