Description
Albino Rocca Nebbiolo d'Alba is a single-site wine from a parcel between Barolo and Barbaresco that acts as an early-drinking understudy to the estate's Barbaresco.
Nebbiolo d'Alba covers land around Alba outside the two great appellations, and its wines are generally lighter in tannin and quicker to open than Barolo or Barbaresco. Like most of the Rocca range, this comes from a single site: a parcel in the westernmost part of the Seno d'Elvio subzone, an area known locally as Terra di Mezzo, or middle earth. The vines range from 15 to 60 years old. The Rocca family, based at Barbaresco, mature the wine for 12 months in large Austrian and German oak casks, which softens the tannin without marking the fruit. The result offers real depth and interest for the money and gives a useful preview of the style of the Barbaresco to follow.
Approachable on release and good for five years or so; serve at 16-18C with tajarin, roast veal or a young Toma cheese.
