Alfredo Maestro Consuelo 2020

Consuelo is a barrel-fermented, skin-macerated white made entirely from Albillo Mayor vines planted between 1891 and 1910.

Albillo Mayor is the white parent of Tempranillo and the traditional white grape of the Duero valley, where it survives in small numbers among very old red plantings. Alfredo Maestro has assembled a selection of these ancient vineyards, planted in the two decades either side of 1900, and treats the fruit as he would a red. It was hand-harvested, destemmed and crushed, then given seven days on skins before fermenting in 500-litre French oak barrels on natural yeasts, with no additions at any stage. The wine spent 12 months in those barrels on fine lees and was racked twice before bottling. That combination of skin contact, barrel fermentation and extended lees ageing builds a broad, structured white with genuine tannic grip, closer in weight and shape to a light red than to a conventional Spanish white.

Best served at 10–12°C, and it will keep improving for several years. Try it with roast poultry, grilled pork belly or an aged hard cheese.
