Algueira Ribeira Sacra Brandán 2017

Algueira Ribeira Sacra Brandán is an unoaked Godello from a terraced vineyard on the cooler bank of the River Sil.

Ribeira Sacra in inland Galicia is a landscape of near-vertical terraces cut above the Sil and Miño rivers, worked by hand because nothing else is possible. Algueira's Fernando González has painstakingly restored the terrace this wine comes from, on the north-facing Ourense side of the Sil — the opposite bank to most of the estate's holdings, and the cooler of the two. The vines are between thirty and eighty years old, rooted in the losa, the local schist, of the Amandi gorge. The name is a nod to the region's Celtic past: Brandán was a warlord said to have settled the area. Fermentation runs on natural yeasts alone and the wine sees no oak at all, which leaves the Godello clear and taut.

Drink young while the cut is at its sharpest, though it will hold a few years. Serve at 10–12°C with grilled octopus, pan-fried whiting or an empanada.
