Description
Algueira Ribeira Sacra Brandán is an unoaked Godello from a restored south-facing terrace in the Amandi gorge.
Amandi is the warmest and most celebrated subregion of Ribeira Sacra, its terraces cut into schist above the river Sil and reachable only on foot. The vineyard behind this wine was painstakingly restored by Fernando González Riveiro, and the vines on its south-facing slope range from 30 to 80 years old. The name honours the Celtic ancestry of the area: Brandan was a Celtic warlord who first settled it. Winemaking is deliberately plain. Fermentation runs with natural yeasts alone and the wine sees no oak at any stage, so what reaches the bottle is the mountain fruit and the salinity the schist gives it, finished with the faint phenolic grip that comes from low yields. It is a straightforward reading of a variety that can easily be over-worked.
Drink over the next four or five years with grilled fish, empanada or a plate of shellfish. Serve at 10-12°C.
