Algueira Ribeira Sacra Brandán 2022

Algueira Brandán is an unoaked Godello from a restored terrace on the cool north-facing bank of the Sil in Ribeira Sacra.

Ribeira Sacra is a region of near-vertical terraces cut into the gorges of the Sil and Miño rivers in inland Galicia, where the work is done by hand and yields are necessarily low. Fernando González of Algueira has spent years restoring abandoned terraces, and this vineyard sits on the Orense side of the Sil, facing north and therefore cooler than most of the estate's holdings, with vines of 30 to 80 years rooted in the losa, or schist, of the Amandi gorge. The name honours Brandán, a Celtic figure said to have settled the area, a nod to the region's pre-Roman past. Fermentation is with natural yeasts alone and the wine sees no oak at all, so the fruit and the schist-derived tautness carry the wine. The result is layered and fleshy without losing its citrus drive.

Drink over the next four to five years with grilled octopus, scallops or roast chicken. Serve at 10-12°C.
