Description
Algueira's entry-level Mencía is an unoaked red from the terraced slate slopes above the river Sil in Ribeira Sacra.
Ribeira Sacra lies in southern Galicia, where the Sil and the Miño cut steep gorges and vines are worked on narrow terraces of slate and schist, much of it by hand or by winch. Algueira, founded by Fernando González at Doade, was among the estates that revived commercial winemaking in the region. This bottling comes from the estate's younger Mencía vines on those slopes. Where the premium cuvées are fermented with whole bunches and aged in oak, the fruit here is destemmed and raised entirely in stainless steel, fermented with indigenous yeasts and macerated for fifteen to twenty days before an early release. The intention is a direct, unadorned introduction to the variety and to the region rather than a wine for the cellar.
Drink it young and lightly chilled, at 14–16°C, with grilled octopus, chorizo or roast pork.
