Algueira Ribeira Sacra Risco 2019

Algueira Risco is a varietal Merenzao from 80-year-old vines on the terraced slopes of the Amandi gorge in Ribeira Sacra.

Merenzao is the same variety as the Jura's Trousseau and Portugal's Bastardo, and was most likely brought to this corner of Galicia by the Cistercian monks who settled the river gorges in the Middle Ages. Ribeira Sacra is worked in narrow terraces above the Sil and Miño rivers, and Algueira's vines average eighty years, rooted in a steep slope of gneiss, quartz and slate. The fruit is fermented with wild yeasts using whole bunches throughout, pressed by foot, and aged for twelve months in old oak with some vessels of local chestnut. The result is pale but not slight, perfumed and finely detailed, with more colour and density than a Jura red and a lucid, tender frame.

Drinking well now and good for eight years. Serve slightly cool, at 15-16°C, with grilled rib-eye, roast pork or wild mushrooms.
