Description
Allegrini Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is a rich, powerful red from one of the most respected family estates in the Valpolicella Classico zone.
For centuries the family has farmed vines around Fumane, in the hills north of Verona, and the estate is known for championing native grapes, including the rare Oseleta, which it helped bring back into use. Amarone is made by the traditional appassimento method: hand-picked bunches of Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and a little Oseleta are laid out to dry for several months after harvest, concentrating sugar, colour and flavour. The shrivelled grapes are then fermented dry and the wine is aged in oak before release. The result is deep ruby in colour and full bodied, with dark cherry, prune and spice balanced by fresh acidity and firm, ripe tannins.
This is a wine for slow-cooked red meats, braised beef in red wine, game, osso buco or a wedge of aged Parmigiano or Monte Veronese. Open it an hour or so ahead, or decant, and serve at around 16 to 18 degrees. It will reward patient cellaring, with the producer suggesting it can develop for up to 20 more years.
