Description
Allegrini La Poja IGT is one of Italy's rare single-vineyard wines made entirely from Corvina, grown on a hilltop in the Valpolicella Classico zone.
La Poja is a small parcel at the very top of the La Grola hill, north-west of Verona, on thin limestone soil where the Allegrini family found that Corvina Veronese could stand on its own without the blending partners the local rules require. Because a varietal Corvina falls outside the Valpolicella regulations, the wine has always been bottled as an IGT. It is a dry table wine rather than an appassimento wine, made from grapes picked and fermented in the ordinary way and then matured for a long period in French oak. First made in the 1980s, it helped establish the idea that the Veronese hills could produce a serious single-site red.
Serve at around 18 degrees with roast beef, game or mature hard cheeses, and decant it beforehand. It ages well over fifteen years and more.
