Almaviva 2018

Almaviva is the flagship red of Puente Alto, a Franco-Chilean collaboration that set a new standard for top-tier Chilean wine.

Its story begins with two families of wine: Baroness Philippine de Rothschild's Baron Philippe de Rothschild company and Chile's Concha y Toro, who created the estate together, with 1996 as the first vintage. Puente Alto sits on the upper banks of the Maipo River, where gravelly soils and the cooling breezes that drop off the Andes produce Cabernet Sauvignon with both depth and freshness. Carmenère, Chile's signature grape, joins Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot in the blend, and the wine is aged in French barrels. The estate calls 2018 an exceptional vintage, and the wine is dark, deep and precise, with a broad structure, bright acidity and smooth, polished tannins.

This is a wine to open with care: decant for an hour, then pour at 16 to 18 degrees alongside chargrilled wagyu, lamb cutlets with rosemary or a mushroom and truffle risotto. With time in the cellar it will reward patience well into the next decade and beyond.
