Almaviva 2019

Almaviva is a Cabernet-led red from Puente Alto, widely regarded as one of South America's great wines.

Created by Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Concha y Toro, the estate takes its inspiration from the classified growths of the Médoc while speaking clearly of its Chilean home. Vines grow on stony alluvial terraces left by the Maipo River, a site long prized for Cabernet Sauvignon, and warm days followed by cool nights allow slow, even ripening. The 2019 blend adds a little Merlot to the usual Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and the assembled wine is matured in French oak. The result is voluminous and harmonious, with polished tannins, great density and the fresh acidity that Puente Alto is known for.

For the best of it, open an hour or two before dinner and serve at around 17 degrees. Rare scotch fillet, braised beef cheeks or a wild mushroom pie make excellent partners. It drinks beautifully now after a decant, and has the structure for long cellaring.
