Almaviva 2020

Almaviva is a Franco-Chilean icon wine, blended from Cabernet Sauvignon and its Bordeaux companions grown in Puente Alto.

The partnership behind it pairs the Rothschild family of Château Mouton Rothschild with Concha y Toro, Chile's largest wine company, and the estate was set up with the aim of making a Chilean wine to stand alongside the great classified growths of Bordeaux. The vineyard lies at the edge of the Andes on the upper Maipo, where poor, stony soils limit vigour and bring concentration to the grapes. Carmenère, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot are blended with the Cabernet to add perfume, colour and grip, and the wine is raised in French oak barrels. The winery describes 2020 as an excellent, dry vintage, and the wine has density and structure, with ripe, coated tannins and good acidity keeping it in balance.

Let it breathe: an hour in the decanter and a serving temperature of around 16 to 18 degrees will open it up. Enjoy with slow-cooked lamb, a peppered eye fillet or hard aged cheeses. A warm, dry year like this gives a generous wine that is enjoyable young yet built to age.
