Description
Altano Douro is a Douro red made by the Symington family, a house better known for a century and a half of port than for table wine.
The Douro Valley was demarcated in 1756, making it one of the oldest protected wine regions in the world, and for most of that time its terraced schist slopes were given over entirely to port. Altano belongs to the modern chapter of the valley, in which the same old vineyards and the same indigenous grapes, chiefly Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca, are turned to unfortified red wine. The Symingtons draw the fruit from their holdings in the Douro Superior, the hotter and drier country upriver, and age a portion of the blend in oak before bottling. It is made to be drunk young rather than laid down, which is not something anyone would say of the family's ports.
It suits grilled meats, roast lamb and firm cheeses, and is best served a touch below room temperature.
