Description
Angel Rodríguez Rueda Verdejo Martínsancho comes from El Pago de Martínsancho, a seventeenth-century vineyard whose old Verdejo the Rodríguez family rescued and propagated.
Rueda, on the high plains of Castilla y León, is Spain's benchmark region for Verdejo, and Martínsancho is one of its historic sites. In the 1970s massale cuttings from the original vines were used to extend the plot, and the wine is now made from those forty-plus-year-old bush vines, rooted in ancient alluvial gravels that run as deep as thirty metres. The grapes are pressed slowly into two large glass-lined tanks where the juice ferments with indigenous yeasts, then move by gravity to the cellar for ageing in century-old 5,000-litre oak cubas. The cellar is underground, which is unusual in Spain, and holds close to 10°C year round; that allows the family to avoid sulphur additions during winemaking and to leave the wine undisturbed on its fine lees. The style is textural and racy rather than overtly aromatic.
Drink over the next three or four years, with grilled white fish, goat's cheese or a chicken and almond dish. Serve at 10 to 12°C.
