Description

Angostura Aromatic Bitters is the world's best-known cocktail bitters, at 44.7% alcohol.

The recipe was developed in the 1820s by Dr Johann Siegert in the Venezuelan town of Angostura, originally as a medicinal tonic, and the company later moved to Trinidad, where it is still made. It is a concentrated infusion of herbs and spices, used by the dash rather than drunk on its own. The oversized label is a famous accident that was never corrected.

A few dashes are essential in an Old Fashioned, a Manhattan and a Champagne Cocktail, and in lemon, lime and bitters.
