Description
Anne Gros & Jean-Paul Tollot Les Fontanilles Minervois is a field-blend red from a single walled vineyard, with Grenache, Carignan, Cinsault and Syrah grown side by side and picked together.
Two Burgundians were behind the move south: Anne Gros of Vosne-Romanee and Jean-Paul Tollot of Chorey-les-Beaune, who spent years hunting for a site before settling at Cazelles in 2006. The vines climb the hills on clay, marl and sandstone, ringed by wild thyme, rosemary and pine, and run from 25 to 50 years old. Fruit arrives by hand and ferments on indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled steel. It then rests roughly twelve months, half in oak and half in tank.
Black raspberry and plum come first, then cracked pepper and a lick of garrigue, with silky tannins and a savoury close. Pour it at around 16°C with lamb roasted in herbs, or pork braised with black olives and thyme.
