Description

Aperol is the bright orange Italian aperitivo behind the Spritz, at 11% alcohol.

Aperol was created by the Barbieri brothers in Padua and launched in 1919. The recipe, which has not changed, is an infusion of bitter and sweet oranges, rhubarb, gentian and other herbs and roots. It is lighter in alcohol and less bitter than most Italian bitters, which made it the natural base for the Spritz, the aperitivo of the Veneto.

For a Spritz, combine three parts Prosecco, two parts Aperol and one part soda over ice, with a slice of orange.
