Armand Heitz Meursault 1er Cru Perrières 2022

Armand Heitz Meursault 1er Cru Perrières comes from the vineyard most often named as the finest in Meursault and a perennial candidate for promotion to grand cru.

Les Perrières takes its name from the stone quarries that once worked this part of the slope, and the connection is not incidental: the soil is shallow and stony over hard limestone, and the vines have to dig for what they need. It lies on the Puligny side of the commune, above Les Charmes, and has long been treated as the benchmark site of the village. Armand Heitz took over his family's vines in the 2010s and farms organically, with a regenerative approach that brings livestock, trees and hedgerows back into the vineyards. In the cellar the handling is deliberately unhurried, with whole bunch pressing, natural fermentation and ageing largely in used barrels.

Best given time, since a decade in a cool cellar is not excessive; at the table it belongs with turbot, lobster or a rich poultry dish rather than anything delicate.
