Description
Arnaud Lambert Saumur Brézé Clos du Midi is a dry white Chenin Blanc from a single walled parcel on the limestone hill of Brézé, bottled here in magnum.
Arnaud Lambert farms around Saint-Just-sur-Dive and on the slope of Brézé, the hill south of Saumur whose deep tuffeau limestone was quarried for cellars and whose vineyards were walled into individual clos centuries ago. The estate is farmed organically, and its Brézé holdings are worked parcel by parcel, each clos picked and bottled separately. Clos du Midi is planted to Chenin Blanc on shallow clay over tuffeau, a thin soil that limits vigour and gives the fruit the firm acidity and chalky grip that mark the site. The grapes are whole-bunch pressed and fermented with indigenous yeasts, then aged on fine lees in older barrels and larger wood, with no attempt to soften the wine's natural line. It is bottled dry.
A taut, mineral white with the structure to reward a few years in bottle; serve at 11 to 12 degrees with roast fish, veal, poultry in cream sauce or a ripe goat's cheese.
