Arnaud Lambert Saumur-Champigny Montées des Roches 2020

Arnaud Lambert Saumur-Champigny Montées des Roches is a Cabernet Franc from a single limestone-based site in the appellation.

The Saumur-Champigny vineyards sit on a plateau above the Loire and the Thouet, where a shallow covering of clay and sand lies over the soft tuffeau limestone that also forms the region's cellars. Sites with the thinnest topsoil, such as this one, give tauter, more mineral Cabernet Franc. Arnaud Lambert has farmed the family vineyards organically since taking them over from his father, working the soils and harvesting by hand. Fermentation runs on indigenous yeast with a gentle extraction, and elevage takes place in a mix of tank, foudre and used barrel so that the limestone imprint is not covered by oak.

Fine boned and savoury, it suits roast veal, duck, mushroom dishes and semi-hard cheese; serve at around 16 degrees.
