Description
Arnaud Mortet Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from 0.2 hectares of very old vines close to Griotte-Chambertin, on red soil with a high active chalk content.
Charmes-Chambertin lies on the flatter ground below Chambertin, on the Morey side of the Gevrey slope, and takes its name from the chaumes, or fallow land, that once covered it. Mortet's parcel is unusually well sited within the vineyard, up towards Griotte, on pebbly red soil with plenty of active limestone, which tends to lift aromatics and firm the finish. The vines are old and the crop was marked by millerandage, the uneven fruit set that leaves many tiny, seedless berries with a high ratio of skin to juice. Arnaud and his team hand-destemmed over half the fruit, and the wine saw slightly less new oak than the Mazoyères. Charmes from this address is typically more red-fruited and spicier than the Mazoyères, while keeping the opulence and the sweet, floral fruit the vineyard is known for.
Drink from around eight years, with two decades in front of it. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, wild mushrooms or a rare beef fillet.
