Arnaud Mortet Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru 2022

Arnaud Mortet Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from the lower part of the vineyard bordering Morey-Saint-Denis, where deeper clay holds moisture through dry seasons.

Mazoyères-Chambertin is one of the nine grands crus of Gevrey-Chambertin, lying south of Charmes on the Morey side; growers may label the fruit as Charmes-Chambertin, though those who believe the site has its own voice bottle it under its own name. Arnaud Mortet works 0.45 hectares in Mazoyères dessous, the lower section, with vines averaging 45 years. The soil here carries more clay than his Charmes parcel, and that reserve of moisture is a real advantage in warm, dry seasons. In the cellar the approach is the same painstaking one used across the range: between half and 60% of the fruit was destemmed by hand, berry by berry, to leave the grapes intact, and the wine was raised in 50% new oak. The result is a refined rather than muscular reading of grand cru Gevrey.

Best from about eight years and capable of much longer. Serve at 16-18°C with roast venison, braised beef cheek or truffled potatoes.
