Arnoux-Lachaux Grand Cru Échézeaux Les Rouges 2018

Arnoux-Lachaux Échézeaux Les Rouges comes from a narrow 0.7-hectare strip in the Rouges du Bas climat, high on the slope beside the Vosne premier cru Les Beaux Monts.

Échézeaux is a large grand cru in the commune of Flagey-Échezeaux, next door to Vosne-Romanée, and its best climats have always been talked about in the same breath as Vosne itself. Charles Lachaux farms a thin band of vines in Les Rouges, where there is very little topsoil before the roots reach hard limestone, closer in make-up to the rock at Prémeaux than to the deeper soils lower down. That thin cover is what gives the wine its finesse and perfume rather than sheer weight. Fermentation is with whole bunches throughout and the wine is raised in Stockinger casks. From the 2018 vintage the label carries the name of the lieu-dit, Les Rouges, alongside the grand cru.

It rewards eight to fifteen years and should be decanted if opened early; serve with roast duck, hare or a mushroom risotto at 16-18°C.
