Arnoux-Lachaux Grand Cru Échezeaux Les Rouges 2020

Arnoux-Lachaux Grand Cru Échezeaux Les Rouges comes from a narrow 0.7-hectare strip in the Rouges du Bas climat, high on the slope beside the Vosne premier cru Les Beaux Monts.

Échezeaux is a large grand cru in the commune of Flagey-Échezeaux, made up of several distinct climats whose wines differ considerably. Les Rouges, or Rouges du Bas, lies high on the Côte alongside Les Beaux Monts, where there is very little topsoil before the vines reach hard limestone, a profile closer to that of Prémeaux than to the deeper soils lower down. Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux farms a thin strip here. The wine is fermented with whole bunches and raised in Stockinger casks, the Austrian cooperage the domaine favours for its restrained oak signature. Since 2018 the bottling has carried the name of the lieu-dit on the label. The character is one of perfume and texture rather than power, which is why the vineyards of Flagey have so often been grouped with those of Vosne-Romanée.

Best from five years and good for two decades. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, beef fillet with morels or a well-aged Époisses.
