Description
Les Rouges is a thin 0.7-hectare strip in the Rouges du Bas climat of Échezeaux, high on the slope beside the Vosne 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts.
Échezeaux is a large Grand Cru in the commune of Flagey-Échezeaux, made up of many separate climats whose characters differ widely. The Rouges du Bas sector, where Charles Lachaux farms, stretches high up the Côte next to Les Beaux Monts, with very little topsoil above hard limestone, a profile closer to that found at Prémeaux. Wines from this part of the vineyard are a reminder of why the vines of Flagey have so often been grouped with those of Vosne-Romanée. The domaine has labelled the wine with its lieu-dit name since 2018. Farming follows the estate pattern of horse ploughing, tall canopies, no trimming and very low yields, and the wine is made with whole bunches and restrained oak, which suits a site that speaks in perfume and red fruit.
Approachable earlier than the domaine's other Grands Crus, but best from five years and good for twenty. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, game birds or mushroom dishes.
