Arnoux-Lachaux Grand Cru Latricières-Chambertin 2018

Arnoux-Lachaux Latricières-Chambertin comes from a 0.53-hectare parcel in the highest, coolest corner of the grand cru, part of it hemmed in by woods on three sides.

Latricières-Chambertin lies in Gevrey-Chambertin, directly south of Le Chambertin and up against the boundary with Morey-Saint-Denis, and it is the coolest of the Chambertin grand crus. Arnoux-Lachaux first made the wine in 2007, after buying a parcel of vines then 58 years old that sits alongside Clos de la Roche at the top of the slope. The plot is ploughed by horse and yields are very low, 18 hl/ha here after Charles Lachaux pruned hard in the wake of the 2017 frost. Fermentation is with whole bunches, the full crop rather than a portion, and the wine is raised with about a quarter new oak. The result is built on scale and depth rather than early charm.

Worth a decade or more in the cellar and best decanted if opened young; try it with roast venison, beef fillet or aged comté. Serve at 16-18°C.
