Arnoux-Lachaux Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes 2019

Arnoux-Lachaux Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes comes from 0.74 hectares in the middle of a premier cru lying directly below Aux Malconsorts and La Tâche.

Les Chaumes occupies the lower slope at the southern end of Vosne-Romanée, on the Nuits-Saint-Georges side. Its soils carry rather more clay and iron than most of the neighbouring premiers crus, and the practical effect is a wine with more depth and structure in youth than young Vosne usually shows. With time in bottle those tannins soften and the village character reasserts itself, arriving with the perfume and texture Vosne is prized for. The domaine’s rows run from the top of the parcel to the bottom, taking in the full range of the site, and the crop in this release was held below 20 hl/ha. Charles Lachaux’s methods — very high trellising, whole-bunch fermentation, minimal extraction and restrained new oak — are aimed squarely at aromatic transparency rather than weight.

Worth five to eight years and capable of twenty. Serve at 16-18°C with roast venison, duck breast or a mushroom and truffle risotto.
