Arnoux-Lachaux Vosne-Romanée Les Hautes Maizières 2021

Les Hautes Maizières is a Vosne-Romanée lieu-dit of Premier Cru standing, sitting below Suchots and Échezeaux and beside Clos de Vougeot.

This is village land in name only. The parcel lies among some of the most celebrated vineyards in the Côte de Nuits, and its vines average around sixty years of age, which accounts for much of the quality in the glass. Charles Lachaux farms 0.6 hectares here and observes that the iron-rich soil gives more tenderness and less power than the domaine's straight Vosne-Romanée village wine, though in practice this bottling is the more substantial of the two and slower to open. The estate's viticulture, with horse work in the older parcels, tall untrimmed canopies and minimal yields, is matched by a light hand in the cellar: whole bunches, gentle extraction and very little new oak. The wine shows the ripe fruit and spice associated with the commune.

Best given four or five years and good for fifteen. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, beef fillet or a soft rind cheese.
