Ashes & Diamonds Napa Valley Rancho Pequeño Cabernet Sauvignon No.4 is a single-vineyard Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon.

Rancho Pequeño is part of Bart and Daphne Araujo's Oakville property, on the eastern flank of the valley floor in the foothills of the Vaca Mountains. Four hectares planted in 1985, exposed to the south, with very thin topsoils, warm afternoons and cold dawns: old-school Napa Cabernet ground, a touch warmer than the home vineyard at Oak Knoll. Deep loamy soil washed down from the Vacas keeps the water table high, so irrigation is barely needed. The Araujos farm it biodynamically under Steve Matthiasson's guidance. This is the final release, as the vineyard is being replanted in full. Sixteen days in tank, then nineteen months in French oak, thirty-two per cent new.

Diana Snowden-Seysses brings a Burgundian eye to the grape and it shows: aromatics that travel from rose to game, crunchy red fruit, and a light hand throughout. Decant, serve at 17 degrees, and pair it with a dry-aged steak, slow-roasted lamb shoulder, or aged hard cheese.
