Description
Ashton Hills Estate Pinot Noir is a single-vineyard Adelaide Hills red from one of South Australia's most respected Pinot Noir sites.
Stephen George planted this small vineyard in the Piccadilly Valley in 1982, on a cool, south-facing slope of the Mount Lofty ridge at around 570 metres. Over three decades he trialled more than two dozen Pinot Noir clones and kept only the handful that suited the site. The property covers just three hectares, is now part of the Wirra Wirra family, and the wines are made by Liam Van Pelt. The Estate bottling draws on several of those chosen clones, fermented in small batches with a portion of whole bunches and matured in French oak. At 13.5% alcohol it sits in the fine-boned, savoury style the vineyard is known for, with red fruits, spice and fresh acidity.
Serve at around 14 to 16 degrees, a touch cooler than room temperature. It suits roast duck, mushroom risotto, charcuterie or grilled salmon. Enjoyable now with a short time in the glass, and it should reward five or more years in a cool cellar.
