Ashton Hills Reserve Chardonnay 2024

Ashton Hills Reserve Chardonnay is the top Chardonnay from a small, long-established Adelaide Hills estate better known for its Pinot Noir.

High in the Mount Lofty Ranges, the vineyard was planted in the early 1980s, and the cool, high-altitude site gives Chardonnay natural tension and fine acidity. Now part of the Wirra Wirra stable, the winery still works in small batches, keeping only the strongest barrels for the Reserve label. This vintage opens with white florals, nectarine and lemon peel with a hint of sea spray, then cashew, fennel seed and brioche as it sits in the glass. The palate is powerful yet taut, with white stone fruit, lemon curd and savoury notes, and a long, detailed finish.

Enjoy it at around 10 degrees, not too cold, so the savoury complexity shows. Good matches include roast chicken with tarragon, lobster, pork loin and soft washed-rind cheeses. It should age gracefully for the best part of a decade.
