Ata Rangi Crimson Pinot Noir 2024

Ata Rangi Crimson Pinot Noir is the approachable younger sibling to one of New Zealand's most celebrated Pinot Noirs.

Clive Paton planted his first vines on a stony former sheep paddock at the edge of Martinborough in 1980, making Ata Rangi one of the pioneers of the district. The dry, windy climate and free-draining gravel terraces keep yields low and flavours concentrated, and the estate has become a reference point for New Zealand Pinot. Crimson draws mainly on younger vines, and the name ties in with Project Crimson, the conservation effort for native pōhutukawa and rātā trees that the winery has long supported. The 2024 shows red fruits, pink peppercorn, hibiscus and fresh herbs, with plush fruit and finely textured tannins.

Pour it slightly cool, around 14 to 16 degrees. It works with lamb cutlets, seared tuna, mushroom pasta and grilled quail. Delicious now, it has the energy to reward a few years in the cellar.
