Description
Ata Rangi Masters Chardonnay is a single-vineyard Martinborough Chardonnay of power and precision.
Although best known for Pinot Noir, the estate has long made fine Chardonnay, and this bottling comes from the Masters vineyard, one of the individual sites the winery farms around Martinborough. The district's cool nights, dry autumns and stony, free-draining soils give Chardonnay good concentration while holding on to crisp acidity. On the nose there's toasted fennel seed, white cardamom, lemon pith and fresh biscuit, and the palate brings lemongrass, orange blossom and almond. Bright acidity is held in check by fruit weight and fine phenolics, and the finish carries a long, almost salty character the winery sees as a hallmark of the site.
Serve at about 10 to 12 degrees, and consider a decant if drinking young. It suits richer seafood such as crayfish, scallops in brown butter and roast snapper, as well as chicken with morels. Should cellar well for eight years or more.
