Ata Rangi Pinot Noir 2024

Ata Rangi Pinot Noir is the flagship of one of New Zealand's founding Pinot Noir estates, and a benchmark for Martinborough.

When Clive Paton planted a bare paddock on the Martinborough Terrace in 1980, few people believed Pinot Noir could thrive there. Four decades on, this wine is considered one of the country's finest, drawing on old vines including the famous Abel clone, said to have arrived in New Zealand in a gumboot. Gravelly soils, low rainfall and relentless northwesterly winds keep yields tiny. The 2024 shows the estate's signature sweet dried hay and sage aromas alongside cranberry and ripe strawberry, with supple, velvety tannins and fresh acidity.

Allow it some air and serve at 15 to 17 degrees. It is a fine match for roast duck, lamb rack, game birds and mushroom dishes. Enjoyable young, it has a long track record of ageing well for a decade or more.
