Ausàs Ribera del Duero Interpretación 2019

Interpretación is the Ribera del Duero red of Xavier Ausàs, made in a deliberately restrained style for the region.

Ausas spent 25 years at Vega Sicilia and its neighbour Alion, seventeen of them as technical director, before leaving in 2015 to establish his own family domaine on a Burgundian scale; the first Interpretacion followed in 2016. The wine is built from a number of old-vine, high-grown parcels of Tinto Fino, the local Tempranillo, concentrated in Ribera's central belt. Where much of the region is bewitched by new barrels, Ausas uses oak sparingly. The fruit is cold-soaked and fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and concrete, then aged 14 months in French oak with only 30% new wood, split between 225-litre casks and 500-litre demi-muid. Parcels are vinified separately and blended only just before unfiltered bottling. In a region known for power, Interpretacion stands out instead for fruit purity, fine-grained texture and a long, chalky structure; Ausas takes muscle in Ribera as a given and looks for elegance alongside it.

Worth five to ten years in the cellar, or decant it now. Serve at 16-18°C with roast lamb, grilled beef or manchego.
