Description
Branco Vulcânico is a dry white led by Arinto dos Açores with Verdelho filling it out, grown on lava terraces below the volcano that gives Pico its name.
Temperatures on the island sit between 15 and 21°C through the growing season and close to 1,200 millimetres of rain falls each year, which keeps acidity high without any help in the cellar. Whole bunches go to press, the juice settles quickly and ferments in stainless steel, then rests several months on fine lees for texture. UNESCO listed the hand-stacked walls of these vineyards as World Heritage in 2004.
Pineapple and passion fruit arrive first, backed by lime zest, wet stone and a long dry close. Best at 11–13°C with oysters, grilled octopus or cured mackerel.
