Azores Wine Company Thomas Jefferson Edition III Fortified NV

Thomas Jefferson Edition III Fortified is a Pico fortified white in the island's old oxidative style, built on Arinto dos Açores and Terrantez do Pico.

For roughly two centuries the islands shipped a sweet fortified wine to the Americas and to the Russian imperial court, and the third American president kept a stock of it. Oidium and then phylloxera destroyed the vineyards from 1853 and the trade never came back. Working from old texts and casks recovered around the island, the winery rebuilt the style and bottles it in 375 millilitre halves.

Sea air, salt and candied orange on the nose, then toffee, raisin, roasted almond and coffee bean across a full, concentrated palate. Serve at about 14°C with aged hard cheese, foie gras at the start of a meal, or a nut and raisin tart.
