Bachelet-Monnot Grand Cru Bâtard-Montrachet 2020

Bachelet-Monnot Grand Cru Bâtard-Montrachet comes from a 0.14-hectare postage stamp at the cooler Puligny end of the Grand Cru.

Bâtard-Montrachet straddles the boundary between Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet and is the largest of the Montrachet family of Grands Crus, known for power and breadth. The Bachelet-Monnot holding is tiny, sitting right at the top of the slope immediately below Le Montrachet on the Puligny side, planted with fifty-year-old vines at a density of 15,000 vines per hectare. That siting is why this is consistently one of the more mineral and refined examples of the cru: even in sunny seasons the power of the site shows as intensity and drive rather than fat. The brothers picked early and raised the wine in one and two-year-old 350-litre barrels, a larger format that slows oxygen exchange and keeps oak character in the background.

A wine for the long term; allow five years and drink across twenty. Serve at 10–12°C with lobster, turbot or Beaufort.
