Description

Bachelet-Monnot Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru comes from a 0.14-hectare parcel of 50-year-old vines at the cooler, Puligny end of the vineyard, immediately below Le Montrachet.

Bâtard-Montrachet straddles the boundary between Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet on the lower part of the slope, where deeper clay-limestone soils give white Burgundy its greatest weight. The Bachelet brothers' postage stamp of vines sits at the top of the grand cru on the Puligny side, planted at a density of 15,000 vines per hectare. That density forces short pruning, two four-bud baguettes per vine, and yields are correspondingly small. Even in sunny seasons the wine tends to express the power of the site as intensity and drive rather than fat, and it is consistently among the more mineral and refined readings of Bâtard. It was raised in one- and two-year-old 350-litre barrels, so there is no new oak at all, and around 800 bottles were made.

Worth five years in bottle and capable of fifteen or more. Serve at 10-12°C with roast bresse chicken, lobster or a well-aged Comté.
