Description

Bachelet-Monnot Grand Cru Bâtard-Montrachet is made from a 0.14-hectare parcel at the cooler Puligny end of the grand cru.

Bâtard-Montrachet straddles the boundary between Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet, on gently sloping ground of deep, clay-rich limestone immediately below Le Montrachet. Bachelet-Monnot's holding is a postage stamp of 50-year-old vines at the top of the slope at the cooler Puligny end, planted to a density of 15,000 vines per hectare. That density obliges short pruning with two four-bud baguettes, and yields are low as a matter of course. Marc and Alexandre Bachelet work in a deliberately restrained register, and this is consistently one of the most mineral and refined expressions of the grand cru: even in sunny vintages the power of the site shows as intensity and drive rather than fat. Fermentation is spontaneous and the wine is raised in barrel with new oak kept in check. Quantities are very small.

This will repay a decade or more in the cellar and is best with lobster, poached Bresse chicken or aged Comté. Serve at 10–12°C.

*Every effort is made to ensure the current vintage is accurate; however, variations can occur. If you are after a specific vintage, please contact us prior to ordering.
