Description
Bachelet-Monnot Maranges 1er Cru La Fussière Blanc is an uncommon white from the largest premier cru of Maranges.
La Fussière covers almost 35 hectares at the very south of the Côte de Beaune, next to Santenay, facing south towards the start of the Côte Chalonnaise on a slope between 290 and 400 metres. Maranges is far better known for red wine, but the marly limestone here suits Chardonnay well, and Bachelet-Monnot has long made a white from a small parcel of 40-year-old vines occupying the vineyard's highest reaches. The domaine, run by brothers Marc and Alexandre Bachelet from Dezize-lès-Maranges, built its reputation on precisely this sort of overlooked site. Pressing is gentle, fermentation spontaneous and ageing takes place in 350-litre barrels with little new oak, so the wine keeps its cut: a white Burgundy of striking purity with citrus definition and a long, chalky close rather than weight.
It drinks well young and will hold for six or seven years; serve with oysters, grilled whiting or a wašrm goat's cheese salad at 10–12°C.
