Description

Bachelet-Monnot's Pommard Les Chanlins comes from a quarter-hectare of 40-year-old vines on the Volnay border, just above the premier cru of the same name.

Chanlins sits at the northern edge of Pommard where the commune meets Volnay, and the village-level section lies immediately above the premier cru. At 400 metres it is one of the highest and steepest vineyards in the Côte de Beaune, and its stony, chalk-rich soils give a prettier, mid-weighted wine rather than the muscular style Pommard is usually associated with — closer in shape to Volnay. The 0.25-hectare parcel came to Alex and Marc Bachelet from their father, who sold the fruit to négociants until 2011; the brothers are better known for their whites in Maranges and Puligny-Montrachet. In most years the wine ferments with a good proportion of whole bunches, but appreciably less was used here, partly because of the ripeness of the stems and partly to help fill the tank.

Drink from about three years and expect eight to ten in total. Serve with roast lamb, guinea fowl or a mushroom gratin at 16–18°C.
