Bachelet-Monnot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières 2023

Bachelet-Monnot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières comes from a low-yielding parcel of 40-year-old vines next to those of Domaine Leflaive.

Folatières is one of the largest and most highly regarded premier crus of Puligny-Montrachet, lying on the upper slope just beneath Truffière and at the same altitude as Chevalier-Montrachet. The name is said to come from folles-terres, or crazy earth, a reference to the violent erosion these slopes suffer in heavy rain. The vineyard borders Clavoillon and sits a short walk from Pucelles, so the company it keeps is serious. Bachelet-Monnot's holding of around half a hectare lies in the lower, eastern pocket where the soil is very rocky, and it reliably produces tiny bunches with little juice. Marc Bachelet notes that although the vines are only in their forties, they behave as though twice that age. As with the other whites, the wine was fermented spontaneously and raised in 350-litre barrels.

Give it three to five years and expect a decade or more. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, scallops or a creamy soft cheese.
