Bachelet-Monnot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts 2023

Bachelet-Monnot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts is drawn from a 0.45-hectare parcel near the top of a vineyard locals nickname Petit Bâtard.

Les Referts lies on the Meursault side of Puligny-Montrachet, next to Les Combettes, and its clay-rich soils and the texture of its wines have long invited comparison with the nearby grand cru Bâtard-Montrachet, hence the nickname. The Bachelet brothers farm 40-year-old vines here, directly beside Domaine Sauzet's holding and just under Combettes. The ground is very stony, which brings generosity and flesh to the wine, but there is no shortage of mineral charge or chewy extract to hold it in shape. Fermentation runs on indigenous yeasts and the wine was raised entirely in 350-litre barrels, a quarter of them new; the larger format means a lower ratio of oak surface to wine than a standard barrique, so the wood works on texture more than flavour.

Best from three to five years, with a decade ahead of it. Serve at 10-12°C with roast pork loin, blue-eye trevalla or a mushroom risotto.
