Bachelet-Monnot Santenay Les Prarons Dessus comes from one of the appellation's northernmost vineyards, sitting directly against Chassagne-Montrachet's Morgeot.

Santenay marks the southern end of the Côte de Beaune, and its northern edge shares both geology and character with Chassagne next door. Les Prarons Dessus lies just beneath Clos de Tavannes and adjacent to Morgeot, on chalky soils carrying a good measure of red clay. That clay, together with the age of the vines, gives a darker and rounder Santenay than the appellation's reputation for firmness would suggest, with finer tannins to match. Bachelet-Monnot, the domaine run by brothers Marc and Alexandre from Dezize-lès-Maranges, has built its name on aromatic, finely drawn reds from the Côte's southern reaches. This cuvée was fermented with one-third whole bunches and raised in traditional 228-litre barrels, of which 20 per cent were new, a restrained regime that leaves the fruit and the site's fine-grained structure in front.

Approachable after two or three years and good for eight to ten. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, mushroom tart or a plate of soft cheeses.
