Bachelet-Monnot Santenay Les Prarons Dessus 2023

Les Prarons Dessus is one of Santenay's northernmost vineyards, sitting directly against Chassagne's Premier Cru Morgeot.

Santenay closes out the Côte de Beaune to the south, and its northern edge, just beneath Clos de Tavannes, is where the village most resembles its grander neighbour. The chalky soils here carry a good proportion of red clay, which together with the age of the vines gives a darker, rounder Santenay with more flesh and finer tannins than the appellation usually offers. Bachelet-Monnot, based at Dezize-lès-Maranges, is best known for whites but has built an equally serious range of reds from this southern corner. One-third whole bunches were included in the ferment, and the wine was raised in traditional 228-litre barrels with 20% new oak. In house terms it is the Chambolle to the Charmes cuvée's Gevrey: fine-boned rather than muscular.

Drink from now to ten years, with roast duck, veal or mushroom dishes, at 16 to 18°C.
