Bachelet-Monnot Santenay Vieilles Vignes 2021

Bachelet-Monnot Santenay Vieilles Vignes is an old-vine village red assembled from several sites after a difficult season reduced the domaine to a single red cuvée here.

Santenay was among the hardest-hit villages of the Côte de Beaune in this vintage, so the grower made no Santenay Blanc and one red instead of the usual three, blending the single vineyards of Les Charmes Dessus and Les Prarons Dessus. Les Charmes lies just below the Clos Rousseau premier cru on the south-eastern slopes, where red clay and rocky limestone give aromatic, racy reds of finesse and freshness. Les Prarons Dessus is one of Santenay's northernmost vineyards, next to the Chassagne premier cru Morgeot and just beneath Clos de Tavannes; its chalky, red-clay soils and old vines give a darker, rounder wine with finer tannins. Old vines in Le Chainey and Les Bras, on rocky ground above the domaine's Maranges plantings, also contribute to the blend.

Drinking well from release and worth five to eight years in the cellar; serve at 16–18°C with duck, mushroom risotto or roast pork.
